Antonio Prats Ventos

Born in Barcelona, June 24, 1925 - Died in Santo Domingo April 13, 1999 was a painter, sculptor, artist and ceramist. Came to the Dominican Republic in 1940, with his parents, who were part of a group of Spaniards who fled the Spanish civil war. Stepson of Spanish painter Antonio Vila -Shum- although it was in contact with art since childhood, was in Santo Domingo where he began his artistic training by participating in the workshops of the Spanish painter Pascual Palacios.

In 1942 he started at the National School of Fine Arts in Santo Domingo with teachers Gausachs and Manuel José Pascual. His main passion was for sculpture using wood, stone, marble, clay and metals, considered by some greater variety of artists who work in the Dominican wood sculpture.

In 1946 he participated in the Third Biennial of Art and received the second prize for sculpture. In 1948 the Fourth Biennial awarded the second prize with a work in alabaster. Mainly identified with the tropics in his sculptures, paintings and drawings. Most sculpture works were performed with an abstract organic orientation which later influenced many painters. In 1950 he began teaching at the National Fine Arts School of Santo Domingo.

In 1967 started as a teacher of Expression Design and Decoration in the Pedro Henríquez Ureña National University and in 1992 received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the same university. He had art exhibitions in Cuba, France, USA, Spain, Brazil and the Dominican Republic. In 1994 he received the Order of Civil Merit awarded by the King of Spain.

In 1966 he received the National Prize of Fine Arts and the Order of Merit of Duarte, Sanchez and Mella granted by the government of the Dominican Republic, his works are in places and establishments in the Dominican Republic, Spain and Puerto Rico.

Nació en Barcelona, 24 de Junio del 1925 - Murió en Santo Domingo 13 de Abril del 1999 fue un pintor, escultor, dibujante y ceramista. Llegó a la República Dominicana en el año 1940, junto a sus padres, los cuales eran parte de un grupo de españoles que huyeron de la guerra civil española.

Era hijastro del pintor español Antonio Vila –Shum- aunque estuvo en contacto con el arte desde pequeño, no fue sino en Santo Domingo donde inicio su formación artística participando en los talleres del pintor español Pascual Palacios, donde en 1942 inicia en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Santo Domingo junto a los maestros José Gausachs y Manuel Pascual.

Su pasión principal era la escultura utilizando para ello la madera, la piedra, el mármol, el barro y los metales, considerado por algunos artistas que tuvo mayor variedad de maderas en la escultura Dominicana. En 1946 participó en la III Bienal de Artes Plásticas y recibió el segundo premio de Escultura. En 1948 la IV Bienal le otorgó el segundo premio con una obra en alabastro.

Se identificó principalmente con el trópico en sus esculturas, pinturas y dibujos. La mayor parte de sus trabajos de esculturas se realizaron con una orientación orgánica abstracta que más tarde influenció a muchos pintores plásticos. En 1950 se inicio como profesor en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Santo Domingo y en 1967 inicia como profesor de Expresión, Diseño y Decoración de la Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña.

En 1992 recibió el título Doctor Honoris Causa por esta misma universidad Realizó exposiciones de arte en Cuba, Francia, Estados Unidos, España, Brasil y la República Dominicana. En 1994 recibe la Orden al Merito Civil otorgado por el Rey de España. En 1966 recibió el Premio Nacional de Bellas Artes y la Orden al Merito de Duarte, Sánchez y Mella otorgado por el gobierno de la República Dominicana, sus obras figuran en plazas y establecimientos de la República Dominicana, España y Puerto Rico.
