Norberto Santana

Born in Santo Domingo. Graduated from the National School of Fine Arts. Then he completed his studies with art teacher Jaime Colson, who was one of his last disciples. He was a member of the group disappeared "El Puño", a group that brought together painters, poets, intellectuals and art critics. Professor at the National School of Fine Arts and of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).

He has made 16 solo exhibitions: Gallery Andrew, 1966 and 1967; Gallery Olympia, 1968; Gallery Auffant, 1970; Studio Gallery, Washington, DC, 1970; Gallery of Modern Art, 1982; Gallery Deniel's, 1983; Gallery Auffant, 1983; Gallery Nader, 1984; Deniel's Gallery, 1985; Nader Art Gallery, 1986; Equis Gallery, La Romana; Gallery of Modern Art, 1992, and Casa Rodrigo de Bastidas, 1999.

He has participated in more than twenty exhibitions and represented the Dominican Republic at the World Exhibition for Young Artists in the United States, 1970. He also worked as a muralist, having done the following: in the Auditorium of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and the front of this Faculty, at the School of Humanities and Economics, as well as in the Central Bank Auditorium.

His works are in private collection. The biography for Norberto Santana. In 1972 he won the Third Prize at the Annual E. León Jimenes, in 1974 and in 1979 the Alpaca Award Special Prize for Painting at the Fourteenth Biennial of Visual Arts. According to art critic Odalís Perez, Norberto Santana, "is light sensitive geometry in the drawing and this particularized an object that we can not classify as cubist or Neo-cubist but simply as neo-expressionist.

Nació en Santo Domingo. Graduado en la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. Posteriormente pasa a finalizar sus estudios con el maestro Jaime Colson, de quien fue uno de sus últimos discípulos. Fue integrante del desaparecido grupo “El Puño”, agrupación que aglutinaba a pintores, poetas, intelectuales y críticos de arte. Profesor de la Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes y de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD).

Ha participado en más de veinte exposiciones colectivas y representó al país en la Exposición Mundial para Artistas Jóvenes en Estados Unidos, 1970. Se destacaba además como muralista, habiendo realizado los siguientes: en el Paraninfo de Medicina de la Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo y parte frontal de Biography Norberto Santana dicha Facultad; Facultad de Humanidades y de Ciencias Económicas, así como también en el Auditorio del Banco Central.

Sus obras figuran en colecciones privadas e internacionales. En 1972, obtuvo el Tercer Premio en el Concurso Anual E. León Jimenes; en 1974, el Premio Alpaca y en 1979 el Premio Especial de Pintura en la Décimo Cuarta Bienal Nacional de Arte Plásticas. De acuerdo al crítico de arte Odalís Pérez, “la geometría sensible es luz en el dibujo y éste particulariza un objeto que no podemos catalogar como cubista o neo-cubista, sino como simplemente un neo-expresionista.
