Maximo Gomez y Baez (November 18, 1836 to Baní – June 17, 1905 in Havana) was a Dominican Major General in the Ten Years' War (1868–1878). He was also Cuba's military commander in that country's War of Independence (1895–1898). Was born in the town of Baní, Province of Peravia in the Dominican Republic. During his teenage years he joined in the battles against the frequent Haitian incursions of Soulouque in the 1850. He was trained as an officer of the Spanish Army at the Zaragoza Military Academy.
He had arrived originally in Cuba as a cavalry officer, a Captain in the Spanish Army and fought alongside the Spanish forces in the Dominican Annexation War (1861–1865). After the Spanish forces were defeated and fled the Dominican Republic in 1865 by order of Queen Isabel II, many supporters of the Annexionist cause left with them, and he moved his family to Cuba.
He retired from the Spanish Army and soon took up the rebel cause in 1868, helping transform the Cuban Army's military tactics and strategy from the conventional approach favored by Thomas Jordan and others. He gave the Cuban Mambises their most feared tactic: The Machete Charge.
Máximo Gómez y Báez (18 de noviembre 1836 en Baní - 17 de junio de 1905 en La Habana) fue un Dominicano Mayor General en la Guerra de los Diez Años (1868-1878). También fue comandante militar de Cuba en la guerra de ese país de la Independencia (1895-1898). Nació en la ciudad de Baní, Provincia de Peravia en la República Dominicana.
Durante su adolescencia se incorporó en las batallas contra las incursiones frecuentes de los haitianos de Soulouque en el 1850. Se formó como oficial del Ejército Español en la Academia Militar de Zaragoza. Había llegado originalmente en Cuba como Oficial de Caballería, Capitán en el Ejército Español y luchó junto a las fuerzas Españolas en la República Dominicana Guerra de Anexión (1861-1865).
Después de que las fuerzas Españolas fueron derrotadas y huyeron de la República Dominicana en 1865 por orden de la Reina Isabel II, muchos partidarios de la causa anexionista se fueron con ellos, y entonces el se trasladó con su familia a Cuba. Se retiró del Ejército Español y pronto tomó la causa rebelde en 1868, ayudando a transformar la táctica y la estrategia militar del Ejército de Cuba desde el enfoque convencional favorecido por Thomas Jordan y otros.
